Can JET Program participants hold private tutoring sessions?

Can JET Program participants hold private tutoring sessions?
I've heard of English speaking people moving to Japan and making some money by holding private classes in their homes. Can JET program participants do the same?

Technically, if you're on a working visa, you can only have one job. Therefore, no you aren't legally allowed to do it. However, no one will probably know and you won't have any problems if you do this.

The JET contract states that you cannot get paid for doing private lessons, so you are not allowed to give private lessons because it would violate your contract. Some Boards of Education organize evening eikaiwa classes for adults or tutoring for kids outside of the JET's regular working hours, but rather than getting paid for such lessons you get vacation time equal to your evening lesson hours. Some versions of the JET contract say that if you have special permission from the Board of Education or your school you can give paid private lessons, but it is highly unlikely that you would be granted such permission. However, JETs get paid more and have better benefits than most other ALTs.

The people above are exactly right; technically no, you can't. But most of the JETs in my area do have private lessons. There are many benefits to teaching private, not just the money, so they have a lot going for them.
