I am actually working in Japan as a product photographer though I have a background in fine art photography, and as far as money is concerned it is pretty much the same as if you were working in any large metropolitain area in the United States namely New York, LA, or the San Francisco bay area. Though I work freelance, I have friends who work in large studios doing product photography, mainly for Toyota and other auto manufacturers, and from what they say the work is stable and the pay is fair. Your pay of course is dependant upon what kind of skills you have. For example someone who is a specialist at photoshop(this depends on your skill and your speed) can make anywhere from around 12-25 an hour. If you are looking at working in a large studio then my suggestion is to learn to speak or at least listen to Japanese really well. If you have worked in a large studio before you know how communication is so critical, and if you are not familiar Japanese studio photographers can be quite short tempered and if things arent going right, they wont hesitate to hit you on the back of your head and yell at you. If you do decide to move here, then my suggestion is to move to Tokyo where there are a lot more jobs in the advertising and photography industry. The problem of course about working in Tokyo is that it costs quite a bit to live there, so plan on living in the outskirts and communting because lets be honest photography isnt exactly a career that one pursues for lots and lots of money.
